“Patrick Villas is a sculptor of living things. His work captures strength, space and motion all at once. After 30 years of sculpting animals, he knows them better than anyone.
His work, even though it hints at figurative realism, is on the verge of the most refined abstraction. Like his illustrious predecessor Rembrandt Bugatti (1884-1916), he patiently trained his eyes in the quiet zoo of Antwerp, looking to understand and sublimate the structures of life. Among all the animals he observed, his big cats stand out the most. Patrick Villas developed a true fascination for these wild beasts he sculpted over and over again.
Patrick Villas’ work is all together analytical, condensed and dynamic. Volumes are hand shaped, and details are barely sculpted to catch the light and break down the surface into a multitude of entangled planes suggesting the powerful web of bones and muscles underneath.
Patrick Villas is undoubtedly one of the most talented animal artists of his generation. In a nervous and organic style, he seeks to capture the transcendence of beauty trough the plasticity of materials.”
