Titus-Carmel (Gérard)


Gérard Titus-Carmel was born on October 10th in Paris. He lives and works at Oulchy-le-Château, in Aisne. From 1958 to 1962, Gérard Titus-Carmel studies at Boulle in Paris. His first personal exhibition took place in 1964. Painter, illustrator and engraver, he participated to almost 500 collective exhibitions, and over 250 personal ones world-wide. His work is also presented in about a hundred museums and public collections. Gérard Titus-Carmel created monumental art works for the Grand Hall of the Ministry of Finances in Paris, the Espace Olivier Messiaen of the Drac Champagne-Ardenne in Châlonsen-Champagne and the Palais des Congrès of Nantes. Gérard Titus-Carmel officially represented France in many international manifestations such as the Biennale de Paris (1969), Expo ’70 (Osaka, 1970), the Biennale d’Alexandrie (1972), « Amsterdam-Paris-Düsseldorf » (Guggenheim Museum, New York, 1972), Dokumenta VI (Cassel, 1977), European Dialogue (Biennale de Sidney, 1979), Biennale Internazionale d’Arte (Venice, 1972 et 1984), « Art en France : un siècle d’inventions » (Moscou, Leningrad, 1989), « Art contemporain en France » (Universal exhibition of Séville, 1992), etc. Also an engraver, Gérard Titus-Carmel participated in the most important international etching exhibitions, such as the biennale of Ljublajana, Cracovie, Tokyo, Vienna, Granchen, Biella, Bradford, Baden-Baden, Prague… where he received many prizes. Gérard Titus-Carmel illustrated many poets’ and writers’ books, and published about 50 books of which about 20 are essays on art and literature or poetry books.
