  • Cover Girl

For over fifty years fashion photography has redefined the canons of female beauty again and again. One of the most widely shared visual cultures in the world, the province of advertising and fashion magazines, this particular art of the portrait has always had an impact to one degree or another on contemporary art.

Scheduled to open during Fashion Week, COVER GIRL the art show features ten pieces each of which offers a quirky, offbeat view of the “beautiful woman” aesthetics that is normally conveyed by the world of fashion.

The artworks selected for the show can be broken down into three different categories: those that are directly inspired by fashion photography (Alex Katz, Juan Francisco Casas) ; those that reappropriate its specific language in order to elaborate a critical discourse of a social or political nature (Joséphine Meckseper, Martha Rosler, General Idea, Michel Journiac, Claude Closky); and lastly those that use it as if it were an immense repertory of poetic forms (Hans-Peter Feldmann, Marlo Pascual, Rebecca Bournigault).

COVER GIRL also includes an arresting selection of magazine covers published by Galeries Lafayette between 1906 and 1968.

  • Michele De Lucchi - Le...

Two great French manufactures, Sèvres  - City of ceramic and Baccarat have both made available to Michele De Lucchi their experience, histories and skills. They are producing, simultaneously, one in a hard-paste porcelain, the other in cut crystal, three forms of stemmed cups, all born from the imagination of the Milanese architect.

This new book, the 25th of the collection “Les Cahiers”, traces the various stages of production within both factories.

Happy with the success of other collaborations with great contemporary designers, and sharing the same approach to perfection, these two celebrated houses decided to undertake this ground breaking edition. The result is an exceptional collection, Le Coppe della Filosofia. These stemmed cups are realised in different materials chosen so the dexterity, the flair and the inspiration can properly be expressed. The Coppa dell' etica is flat and encompassing, whilst the Coppa della mistica, is high and refined. The Coppa dell' estetica, the original matrix of the project, is the synthesis of it. Each cup rises, as if in levitation, or in spiritual meditation.

Limited edition. The first 100 copies of the book are accompanied with an original signed and numbered silkscreen, specially created by Michele De Lucchi for this “Cahier.” Size: 53 x 35 cm.

  • Michele De Lucchi -...

Enterprise”. It is the longest-lived piano Manufacture in the world and the only one in France. Its competence and capabilities, so rare at this level, are today being extended into the construction of exceptional furniture realised to special order, or for collectors or display or edition.

From the beginning, the techniques of wood, its working, bending, sculpture, and lacquering, inspired Michele de Lucchi just as much as the history and the culture of the Pleyel Manufacture fascinated him.
With the piano, this priceless instrument, the designer imagined it mounted on "trestles" to present it better. The edges and lines are rounded off, and the curves express themselves beautifully, thanks to the master-craftsmanship that went into the sculpting and bending. The legs, lyre and score-stand have an ethereal, fluid style which seems to make them float. This is then highlighted to greater effect by forming them in solid, natural wood which contrasts with the black lacquered body of the instrument.

Michele De Lucchi immersed himself within the different specialist groups at Pleyel to learn their techniques and the personality dynamics of the team. It was all the motivation he needed to add a new range of exceptional furniture to the collectibles which distinguish Pleyel from the other furniture editors. The first pieces to bear his signature are a line of display-cabinets for collectors, gallery owners, museums, and demanding amateurs in search of exception. These cabinets will exhibit works of art and precious objects.

Limited edition. The first 100 copies of the book are accompanied with an original signed and numbered silkscreen, specially created by Michele De Lucchi for this “Cahier.” Size: 37 x 37 cm.

  • Martine Bedin /...

Martine Bedin designs vases. Jeannette Montgomery Barron is a still-life photographer. They met at Sèvres, in connection with the project presented in this "Cahier". In small steps (à petits pas) their discussions led to them working together, combining their artistic skills to produce this set of vases on which the flowers in the photographs are painted by hand.

“For a long time the theme of the vase has obsessed me (…). The vase is the precious casket for the agony of flowers. But could the fight become more equal?  Between the flower and the vase, which might break first?  Placing an image of a flower on the heart of the object immortalizes the memory of a dignity that has disappeared. The dignity of the object fulfils this mission” explains Martine Bedin. The image gives the vase its sense, its use, its primary function.

Martine Bedin has created six new soft-paste porcelain vases  (Bottle, Ivy, Poppies, Tulip, Wisteria and Vase&vase). All are based on one central matrix, “a kind of archetype of a vase”. For five of them, the matrix is topped with a collar reminding us in miniature of various emblematic Sèvres forms. The sixth vase is totally shaped by Martine Bedin. Each of the six vases receives a different decoration, an image painted on by hand, reproduced from the photos specially taken by Jeannette Montgomery Barron.

Jeannette Montgomery Barron spent some time in the heart of the workshops of Sèvres - Cité de la céramique, learning the various stages in the creation of vases. She has worked hard to ensure her photographic images illuminate the skills of the craftspeople of the Manufacture.

  • Claude Lévêque - Hymne...

Born in 1953, Claude Lévêque is a major artist on the Franch and international scene. His work refers to popular culture, the day to day environment, and to mental images.

He builds atmospheres, environments and objects, dramatically reinforcing the imagery of his installations using light and sound to provoke visual and conceptual emotion. The aim is to let the viewer see things in other ways, to arrive at new perceptions. The essential, in Claude Lévêque's installations, is that we should live with them and let them enter into us...

His installations or scenographies are exhibited in numerous museums or institutions in France and abroad, for example: "The Diamond Sea" in the CRAC of Sète ( 2010 ), " Le Grand Soir”  for the French Pavilion at the 53rd Biennale d'art contemporain de Venise ( 2009 ), " Le Grand Sommeil " in the MAC / VAL ( 2003 ), "Albatros" at the MAMCO of Geneva ( 2002 ), "My Way" for the ARC/ Museum of modern Art of the city of Paris ( 1996 ).....

"Hymne à la Joie", refers to Beethoven’s ninth symphony, and is an in-situ installation for the Galeries Lafayette, Paris, in July 2011. Using  sound and light it draws spectators into its world, tempting them to step beyond the confines of reality.
The photograph Hymne à la Joie,  specially published on this occasion, plunges the spectator into a universe of the abyss.

  • Into the Woods

The book Into the Woods guides us through the eponymous exhibition at the Galeries Lafayette's "Galerie des Galeries," and at the same time, deepens our understanding of it. The exhibition evokes a phantasmagorical mental landscape through the work of eleven women artists. Painting, sculpture, video, sound and installation art — the techniques are many and varied, announcing a mysterious journey ahead.

The works, with all their implicit fairytale reminiscences and woodland folklore, suddenly appear in front of us like incantations. Seemingly obscure, they offer us a choice of entries into parallel universes where sorcery awaits us. Between suggestions of rituals, a secret cabinet hinting at the Black Arts in the nigredo stages and adding a final touch of alchemy, visitors may lose themselves "in the woods," only the better to rediscover themselves in the end.

    Artists :
Laëtitia Badaut Haussmann, Sophie Bueno-Boutellier, Susan Collis, Marcelline Delbecq, Mimosa Echard, Alicja Kwade, Maria Loboda, Anne Laure Sacriste, Iris Van Dongen, Jessica Warboys, Anne Wenzel.

Born in 1977, Daria de Beauvais is commissioner of this exhibition, and currently a curator at the Palais de Tokyo Museum in Paris. An independent exhibition commissioner, she also organizes exhibitions and events at the Saint-Séverin Gallery in Paris.

  • In a Sentimental Mood

Named after the song by Duke Ellington and John Coltrane, the “In a Sentimental Mood” exhibition offers a journey through every facet of love.

Gathering the work of eight artists from different generations and backgrounds – Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Jiri Kovanda, Myriam Mechita, Daphné Navarre, Marylène Negro, Jack Pierson, Alessandro Raho and Jimmy Robert – the exhibition conceived by Vanessa Desclaux explores the experience of love in its universality as well as ultimate singularity.

Through films, installations, sculptures and portraits, the exhibition brings together desire and longing, sensuality and melancholia, using contemporary imagery to express the complexity of human feelings. By drawing on sounds, visual or gestural codes, each exhibit develops a unique approach to exploring the limitations of language in expressing the depth of an emotion.

The exhibition “In a Sentimental Mood” invites visitors to wander through a series of spaces, guided by a constellation of objects and images into worlds where desire, memories and fantasies are reconstructed words of dedication or loneliness uttered, loved and loving bodies glimpsed.

Reinventing the love letter, tapping the poetic possibilities of an object, conjuring a loving embrace – these are some of the ways chosen by the artists to capture the many moods of romantic reverie.

  • Henrik Vibskov - Neck...

Bernard Chauveau Éditeur has published the first monograph in France of Henrik Vibskov, the Danish fashion designer of eclectic style and rich colors. Since graduating from Central Saint Martins in 2001, Vibskov has produced 20 collections.

His particularly artistic approach to fashion quickly led Vibskov to get involved in other artistic fields, such as dance, theater and music. A proteiform artist, his creations have appeared in renowned institutions, like PS1 – Moma in New York, ICA (Institute of Contemporary Art) in London, the Palais de Tokyo in Paris or the Kiyomizu-Dera Temple of Kyoto.

Having already invited Vibskov in 2010, the Galerie des Galeries in Paris gave him carte blanche in 2013 to produce his first exhibition, “NECK PLUS ULTRA.” This title is a play on words between the Latin phrase nec plus ultra, which means “without a flaw,“ and the word neck, an anatomical reference echoing his 2013 fall-winter collection, “The Stiff Neck Chamber.” (Paris fashion show, January 17, 2013)

In this book, Vibskov exposes his inspirations and plunges us into his universe, with its tonality at once poetic, amusing and strange. The artist offers a multimedia exhibit in striking colors and geometrical shapes that blend sight, hearing and touch. Notably, he presents his Stiff Neck Chamber with its forest of birds’ necks hanging from the ceiling head-down, or again, a psychedelic stroll in a looped tunnel. An experience that is complete, stimulating and highly unusual, one that encourages our passage from one state to another.

The limited edition of the book is accompanied by the scarf “Neck Plus Ultra” an original creation, printed on silk, of designer Henrik Vibskov. Produced in a limited run of 100 pieces, the scarf measures 40 x 40 in. (100 cm x 100 cm).

  • Régis Mayot - Jeanne...

The Meisenthal Centre International d’Art Verrier (CIAV), International Centre of Glass Art Works, confronts the vision of contemporary creators and the technical culture of a territory. For fifteen years now, the CIAV has been collecting old glass blowing moulds that are still in working condition in order to constitute a technical reserve, incarnating an object of research as well as a conservatory.

In 2011, on a proposal by the publisher Bernard Chauveau, the CIAV invited designer Régis Mayot to work in their studios. After a great deal of experimentation, the artist was able to emancipate himself from the performances of classical usage of the moulds, and brought forward the “mould as a tool”, whose aesthetics are the result of the technical, mechanical performances that are incumbent to it. By a process of sand moulding, the designer revealed the mechanical beauty of these tools, producing prints of a selection of moulds that were then blown by artists in glass.

The original functional tool then becomes an astonishing object with an unusual aesthetic aspect. Jeanne et Cie (named after one of the moulds chosen by the designer, accompanied by the following ones) may now parade peacefully, reminding us upon this occasion how important it is to not just see things, but to take the time to really look at them.
