Dutch artist, Aldo Bakker, belongs to that new generation of ‘designers’ who truly seeks to ‘give a sense or meaning to forms’.
‘His creations, of a rare poetry, are composed of organic and sensual curves, with subtle and mysterious material effects that invite us to question, as he has accustomed us to do, the gestures or movements they allude to.’
Romane Sarfati, Director of Sèvres-Cité de la céramique
The importance Aldo Bakker has placed on the temporality of, or time accorded to creation has charmed Sèvres-Cité de la céramique. Accustomed to the time-consuming and painstaking attention to detail required with the use of the Urushi Japanese lacquer he employs in some of the furniture he creates, the designer’s approach is the direct opposite of mass creation, which necessitates an extremely rapid manufacturing process. For him, ceramic is a material for which ‘time [is necessary] in order to take ownership of it and to appreciate its qualities.’
The result of his work is on a par with his tenacity: ‘The "Domes","AlinetoB","Pot", "Vase", "Chalice" or "Artefact" [...] are exceptional objects, simple and refined, with lines of an outstanding purity, which come at an opportune moment, revitalizing the decorative arts with a fuller and more sensual approach.’
Romane Sarfati
