Through various media and techniques, this artist duo likes to question contemporary identities and the sometimes crushing weight of history. Working on the shifts that occur from one culture to another, they present here an inventory of their exploration of photographic archives from the colonial period in West Africa. Using images of daily life in the colonies, taken by colonists between 1880 and 1930, they redraw these representations, imbued with implicit ideological violence, in ink. They superimpose a new drawing (using copper or gold pigments) of scenes they captured during their recent stays in these countries onto these images. The past is partially covered by the exuberance of contemporary societies in the midst of change. Their work has been presented at various festivals and in numerous museum exhibitions, including the Musée du Quai Branly in Paris. In 2026, the Chevalme sisters are residents at Villa Albertine in Houston, Texas.
