Paréidolie 2023
Participation to Paréidolie, from 1st to 3 September, at the Château de Servières, Marseille.
For this new edition of Paréidolie, Galerie 8 + 4 proposes a display that mixes big and small history, questioning the nature of drawing. With the Chevalme Sisters, we dive into an exceptional group of drawings reinterpreting old photographs of African colonies. To these drawings questioning the nature of old images of our colonial past, they add drawn variations of French stamps that enter into tension with the underlying history and force us to perceive all images as a source of ideology. For his part, Gilles Pourtier delivers chalk drawings that are the result of scientific analysis of art conversations. The original disappears in favour of coloured annotations attesting to the state of these inspected works and thus forms a surprising constellation of features highlighted by this protocol. Guillaume Millet, through his very rigorous painting work, never ceases to investigate the question of colour and its variations. For Marseille, he presents some drawings where the geometrical rigour of pictorial works gives way to multiple variations on the play between colours and gestures. François Réau, faithful to his principle of equivalence between different modes of representation, delivers here pencil views of landscapes where the motif oscillates between several stages of figurations and saturation. Finally, we are honoured to present a selection of original drawings by Vera Molnar, a historical artist, made in recent weeks, showing possible variations between lines and crossings. These drawings complement a series of recent cyanotypes that she considers to be drawings with light, questioning the laws of chance but also the rigour of protocols that she has been updating since the 1960s.
