Mehdi Moustashar / 3 CS, 2022
An original serigraphy, a poetic dialogue between the square and the arabesque
On the occasion of the publication (June 2023) of his monograph, the artist Mehdi Moutashar has produced an original serigraphy of 30 copies. This sumptuous print produced directly in his studio, in a generous format (50 x 65 cm), is available for subscription until May 31, 2023. Through the founding figure of the square, the poetics of wefts, interlacing, cuts, angles or folds, the artist invites us to consider geometry in its primary sense: measuring the earth.
A Franco-Iraqi artist, Mehdi Moutashar (born in 1943) has had his work recognized for many years: by the Denise René gallery, which exhibited his work in Paris as well as at the Basel fair; by the architect Rifat Chadirigi, who asked him to design all the decorative elements of official buildings in Baghdad; and finally, by the Jameel Prize, which opened up the market for his work to galleries in the Arabian Peninsula. His work mainly focuses on the concept of the square and its grammar. Mehdi Moutashar situates his work between "the arts of Islam and Western geometric arts". He lives and works in Arles, and teaches at the École Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs de Paris.
