Henri Matisse et la Chapelle de Vence, Sœur Jacques-Marie
There are stories that are unique and essential to understanding a major work. Such is the case of the book written by Sister Jacques-Marie – Monique Bourgeois – at the end of her life, which transformed not only her own existence, but also, above all through her, the architecture.
The final and ultimate project of the artist, the Chapel of the Rosary in Vence, marks the culmination of Henri Matisse’s work, as he himself liked to say.
Sister Jacques-Marie, a Dominican nun, was the painter’s model but, above all, the person who encouraged him to embark on the extraordinary adventure of designing the chapel located in the hinterland of Nice. In this book, she recounts the stages of its construction, where friendship and the bond of complicity that grew between them over the years intertwine, and from which this masterpiece emerged.
This new edition, whose layout has been completely redesigned, features, in addition to reproductions of Matisse’s drawings, previously unpublished archival photographs accompanied by excerpts from the painter’s correspondence.
