An overview of the contemporary history of design.

Conceived amidst the artistic effervescence of the 1960s, the Mobilier National’s Atelier de recherche et de création (ARC) sought to establish French design within government departments in the face of competition from abroad, particularly from Italy.

To mark the 60th anniversary of this studio, the Mobilier national is publishing a catalogue raisonné of the designs it has produced since 1964. A true reference work, it presents all these pieces in an unprecedented and comprehensive manner.

The greatest names in design feature throughout the pages, tracing the history of contemporary design over the last sixty years: Mattia Bonetti and Elisabeth Garouste, Erwan and Ronan Bouroullec, Sylvain Dubuisson, Claude and François-Xavier Lalanne, Olivier Mourgue, Pierre Paulin, Christophe Pillet, Elizabeth de Portzamparc, Andrée Putman, Philippe Starck, Martin Szekely, Roger Tallon, Jean-Michel Wilmotte, and Ettore Sottsass…

These iconic creations of their time have found their place in prestigious venues: the presidential palace, government ministries, embassies… all of which serve as exceptional showcases for French design. It is this extraordinary history that this book brings to life, with contributions from 15 authors and design specialists.

Edited by Lucile Montagne.

Foreword by Hervé Lemoine.

The book is published in co-edition with the Mobilier National.
