Emma Lutz, Imprimer la terre
Designer Emma Lutz worked for several months with the Zenner Issard collective to design an editorial object embodying her research into the know-how of Lorraine, her native region, in partnership with the Centre international d'Art verrier de Meisenthal.
The aim of this editorial project is to report on his research into glassmaking techniques that have now disappeared, as well as his discovery of forgotten resources of Eastern France's post-industrial heritage buried in the Vosges forest. The book includes all the elements of his project (interviews with local players, research into tools and processes, drawings, photos and extracts from his reflections), as well as a text by Caroline Naphegyi (member of the “Mondes nouveaux” artistic committee, under the direction of Bernard Blistène).
The editorial object offers two reading temporalities, with a first booklet printed in two colors, green and blue, evoking Emma Lutz's residency in Meisenthal, offering transcriptions of notes, interviews and archives, and a second booklet, assembled in a central notebook, presenting all the original creations made during this period. The situated dimension of his work is formalized graphically by the use of graphic codes specific to glass archives, and by chromatic variations in line with the seasonal nature of the project. Like the site, the texts seem to be surrounded by the forest, in which many glass relics from this know-how are still buried.
A young designer training at the École Boulle and winner of the “Mondes nouveaux” call for expressions of interest launched by the French President and the Ministry of Culture, Emma Lutz draws her inspiration from her native Lorraine. Emma Lutz's project pays tribute to and preserves Lorraine's glassmaking expertise. She works at the Centre international des Arts verriers de Meisenthal, which boasts a collection of thousands of molds, patiently gathered and preserved over the years as Lorraine's artisan glassworks gradually disappeared. To coincide with Design Week 2024, Galerie 8+4 will be exhibiting a number of these creations. The vernissage will take place on Saturday September 7 from 3pm.
