Pierre Buraglio / Vanité avec Hubert Lucot D

With these four original prints created specifically for the exhibition “Suivre Favignana,” Pierre Buraglio revives one of the motifs that is omnipresent in his work: the blockhouse. A testament to a particular moment in history, the blockhouse is above all a form of strangeness in the landscape, opening up unprecedented possibilities for composition. The brutalism of the concrete forms contradicts the coastal landscape. It is this tension that he brings to the fore, while opening it up to other representations. Collage becomes a driving force here, a kind of skilful bricolage that allows him to draw on both his direct observation (and therefore drawing from nature) and the great history of art.

Manet, Seurat, Braque, and many others are present in the form of nods and more or less direct quotations that he enjoys incorporating (by gluing or stapling them) as if to better distract the viewer's gaze. But these works are also the crystallization of his questions about what constitutes a work of art and how it can open up the imagination, allowing the associations he likes to evoke to dialogue freely. Handwriting becomes a central element, as if to better condense what was scattered. These lines punctuate each of his compositions like mysterious sentences. Nothing is fixed, said, or decided, but becomes the beginning of a reconsideration of the very tools of art.

Each of these compositions was printed on Hahnemühle paper in four copies using pigment printing, then cut out and enhanced by the artist's direct interventions in gouache with paper or photographies collages and staples.
