One does not spontaneously think of multiples when referring to the work of Pierrette Bloch, which is more readily associated with her singular ink drawings on paper or her meshes and horsehair threads. Yet the question of the multiple occupied the artist from her early, still hesitant beginnings in the 1950s through to her very last work, a large aquatint completed shortly before her death in 2017.

For Pierrette Bloch, the multiple was first and foremost a matter of circumstance: an encounter, an invitation, a commission, ultimately giving rise to a body of some forty creations across various media and techniques — engraving, lithography, screen printing, tapestry, artist’s jewelry…

The constraints inherent in working with multiples — whether in terms of technique or format — and the demands of a set of specifications were for her so many opportunities for innovation. Rather than merely extending the rest of her work, the multiples illuminate it, or even reinvent it.

Serigraphy No. 13 was printed at the Eric Seydoux workshop in 2004 in an edition of 200 copies.
