Pierre Soulages - Conques / Une lumière révélée

Between 1987 and 1994, Pierre Soulages undertook the conception of the 104 church windows of the Sainte-Foy-de-Conques abbey-church using uncoloured and translucent glass he created to respect the variations of natural light.

In a previously unpublished text, Bruno Dubrogel brings a new perspective to the research of the artist who carried out none less than 700 attempts before achieving the desired result! By engaging a dialogue between Pierre Soulages' thoughts and inside and outdoor views of the windows of the church, the text reveals the extensive creative adventure of the artist, by means of questions regarding aesthetics, spirituality and technologies.

Pierre Soulages' church windows reveal the passage of time. Their “physical” nature serves as an introduction to a poetic experience, a metaphysical meditation. It reveals a light that, as the artist said himself, “Suggests contemplation, silence, concentration and internalisation”.
