Arlene Gottfried. La rue nous appartient, New York, 1970-1980
Catalog of the exhibition La rue nous appartient – New York, 1970-1980 dedicated to Arlene Gottfried at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nancy from October 12, 2019, to January 12, 2020.
Arlene Gottfried found her own creative voice in the street, photographing friends and neighbors, capturing multiculturalism in the district of Brooklyn where she lived. Her shots from the 1970-80s show a face of New York that no longer exists, a raw city in which she evolved with ease, rubbing shoulders with eccentric characters, going from festivals to neighborhood parties and parades of all kinds: the Gay Pride, St Patrick’s Day, the Puerto Rican Day or Halloween.
Gathering more than 70 photographs in color as well as black and white, this exhibition catalog portrays the “city that never sleeps” at a major time in its history, that of a great freedom of personal and sexual expression. This catalog is also the first publication dedicated to the artist in France.
