Aï Kitahara. 2006-2022
This exhibition catalogue and second volume of the monograph by visual artist Aï Kitahara presents her artistic practice between 2006 and 2021.
Working on the structure of her installations and sculptures on computer, using 3D software, Aï Kitahara studies what dynamic phenomena of stacking, modularity and extrusion produce in simple forms.
She integrates a movement, an extension of a kinetic order into them, deploying the plastic possibilities from their initial properties to deform them, sometimes rendering them unrecognisable [...] In Japan, the fold is said to be the place where the spirit infiltrates, and it is from this interstice, at the heart of the fold where the points of contact touch the surfaces and close them, that Aï Kitahara secretly visits the objects.
Aï Kitahara is above all interested in the envelopes that characterise psychological, physical, geographical and architectural space: contours, borders, ramparts, thresholds, walls and doors. Through her multiple works, which combine installations, models and drawings, the artist explores the idea of the frontier. She deconstructs, reconstructs, folds, unfolds and folds again ad infinitum to create worlds between constraints and freedom.
