Zanele Muholi
Catalog of the retrospective exhibition held at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in 2023, this book presents the work of the South African photographer Zanele Muholi.
Zanele Muholi made a name for herself in the early 2000s with photographs aimed at changing the perception of black lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex people in South Africa.
His body of work challenges stereotypical representations, presenting the participants in his photographs as courageously asserting themselves in the face of prejudice, intolerance and often violence.
This book presents the full range of Muholi's activist practice, from her first Only Half the Picture series to Somnyama Ngonyama's self-portraits, Faces and Phases and Brave Beauties, as well as several unpublished essays on her work and an interview with the artist.
Photographer and 'visual activist' in her own words, Zanele Muholi was born in 1972 in South Africa.
From 2020 to 2023, Zanele Muholi will exhibit at Tate Modern in London, Martin Gropius Bau in Berlin, Bildmuseet in Umeå, Institut Valencià d'Art Modern in Valencia and Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris.
