For Jean-François Lacalmontie, born in France in 1947, painting is a continuation of drawing since he builds his pictorial works from sketchbook drawings.
His “automatic” drawings, as the artist call them, are a collection of simple shapes traced with Indian ink on paper or burned with a blowtorch that constitute a sort of alphabet of shapes.
These signs are then directly painted on canvas and seem about to surreptitiously move around on the blank surface. Visitors are free to interpret the work according to their own imagination.
